Dr. George Dimeling was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city steeped in cardiac surgery tradition. His first exposure to cardiac surgery was during his junior year at Central Catholic High School when he attended a redo heart transplant at the University of Pittsburgh. This experience ignited the fire for his academic pursuits. After a successful enlistment serving the country in the U.S. Navy onboard the USS SAIPAN, Dr. Dimeling entered college.
After one semester, Dr. Dimeling was elected into the Commonwealth Honors College at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Dr. Dimeling transferred to the University of Virginia where there was an opportunity to work in the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Research laboratory. Dr. Dimeling then completed graduate studies in physiology at Georgetown University with a thesis in cell signaling in angiogenesis. Dr. Dimeling attended Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia where he was awarded the Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery. Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Dimeling was the top applicant in the country and was selected into Stanford University Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency.
During his time at Stanford, Dr. Dimeling performed 1,280 surgeries, more surgeries than any resident in the history of the program. Dr. Dimeling's surgical interests grew during training from heart transplant to include, minimally invasive mitral repair, connective tissue disorders and complex aortic repairs, valve-sparing aortic repairs, mechanical circulatory support, and TAVR.
Dr. Dimeling published multiple chapters and papers during his residency and was awarded for the highest in service exam score. Dr. Dimeling was appointed as the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Fellow in Cardiac Surgery, in Sydney, Australia, where he focused his operative experience on off pump total arterial revascularization, minimally invasive mitral repairs, and complex aortic replacement.
Dr. Dimeling joined Mid-Atlantic Cardiothoracic Surgeons, LTD in July of 2015. His current interests include heart transplant, mechanical and circulatory support, minimally invasive mitral repair, TAVR, TEVAR, coronary artery by-pass surgery, and complex aortic repairs, including valve sparing aortic root procedures. Dr. Dimeling is a board certified member of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
