Jonathan M. Philpott was born in 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee before entering Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia where he was awarded a BA in Philosophy and History in 1990.
While at Hampden-Sydney, Dr. Philpott was selected to attend a summer program at St. Anne’s College at Oxford University in England to study English Literature and British History. He earned his M.D. degree in 1994 at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He then completed his general surgery internship and residency at the East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. While there, he spent a year as a Research Fellow in Cardiovascular Physiology.
During his six years at East Carolina, Dr. Philpott earned multiple awards including Resident Physician Excellence in Teaching Award for the years 1998, 1999 and 2000. He was also recognized with the Resident of the Year Award in 1997, 1999 and 2000. In 1999, he received the Ray D. Minges Award, given “In Recognition of Superior Accomplishments in Surgical Scholarship and Distinguished Presentation.” Dr. Philpott was elected a member of the surgical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha in 2000.
Dr. Philpott continued his surgical training with a two year fellowship in Trauma Surgery and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This was followed by a two year Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. At his graduation in 2004, Dr. Philpott was awarded the Medical College of Virginia Fellow of the Year Award.
Dr Philpott joined the Surgical team of Indiana/Ohio Heart in Fort Wayne, IN in 2004 with special interests in Heart Failure, Transplantation, Complex Thoracic Aortic Surgery and Non-Cardiac Thoracic cases. He was appointed Assistant Director of the Heart Failure and Transplantation Team, Director, Lutheran Hospital Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program, CV Committee, Trauma Committee and Core Surgeon, Renal Transplantation Program.
Dr. Philpott joined Mid Atlantic Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Ltd. in 2008 with special interests in Heart Failure, Transplantation, Complex Thoracic Aortic Surgery, Surgical Electrophysiology & Arrhythmia, and Non-Cardiac Thoracic cases. He is the Director of Surgical Electrophysiology at the Sentara Heart Arrhythmia Center.
Dr Philpott is a nationally recognized expert for surgical procedures for Atrial Fibrillation, and the Cox Maze IV procedure. He has been heavily involved with the training and certification of surgeons nationally who are learning how to perform the Cox Maze IV procedure. He has also been integral in the development of and refinement of minimally invasive hybrid operations for atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, and has helped lead Sentara to become one of the national leaders in surgical electrophysiology. Dr. Philpott currently serves as the president of the National Alliance of Integrated AFIB Centers (NAIAC).
Dr Philpott is a Diplomat of The American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the Heart Rhythm Society.
Dr. Philpott resides in Norfolk with his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children.
