Joseph R. Newton, M.D.

Dr. Joseph R. Newton, Jr. was born in Wilson, North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before attending Duke University Medical School. His interest in surgery began at the early age of 12 while pursuing his Eagle Scout rank when he observed a fellow scout having a laceration repair that occurred during a 50 mile Appalachian Trail hike. Following this, while at Duke, he did cardiopulmonary resuscitation research that was presented nationally and contributed to current CPR guidelines.

He completed his General Surgery Residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and then continued his training at the MGH culminating as Chief Resident in Cardiac Surgery, Chief Resident in Thoracic Surgery and Chief Resident in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Boston's Children's Hospital. Dr. Newton joined Mid-Atlantic Cardiothoracic Surgeons in 1992 due to its strong national reputation, busy clinical setting and the opportunities to perform cardiac, thoracic and pediatric cardiac surgery.

Dr. Newton is a master cardiothoracic surgeon performing a wide range of complex cardiac procedures including mitral valve surgery, aortic surgery, as well as open atrial fibrillation cases. While performing high quality cardiac cases throughout his career including mitral valve repairs, he developed the practice's and the Sentara system's thoracic (lung/chest) programs. This effort lead to MACTS and Sentara being the first practice and program in Virginia to participate in the STS national thoracic quality database. This database is now the national standard by which thoracic surgery quality is monitored. Dr. Newton lead the effort to develop the first multi-disciplinary thoracic program in the region which cares for the largest number of thoracic oncology surgical patients in the region. He also lead the Sentara system in their launch of lung cancer screening - another regional first. Dr. Newton performs video assisted lobectomies and other high complexity thoracic procedures such as sleeve resections and complex chest wall resections.

Some of Dr. Newton's other professional interests include Trans-catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) by femoral (groin) or trans-apical (chest) approaches and is a founding member of the Structural Heart Team at Sentara Heart Hospital. He also founded and hosts the Virginia Thoracic Forum an annual state wide meeting that brings together thoracic surgeons from all practices in the state to discuss current clinical and quality issues. Dr. Newton is a member of several national committees, as well, in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. He is involved in the local community with children and adults with disabilities and has been named a Top Doc by Hampton Roads Magazine.

Personally, Dr. Newton spends a great deal of time with his five children and their fascinating activities. He enjoys the coast and water access provided by Tidewater Virginia and the Outer Banks.
